Functional Medicine Frequently Asked Question

What Is Integrative Medicine?

Medically Reviewed By: Dr. Neil Neimark, M. D.
Last Updated: October 17, 2025

Integrative medicine blends the best of conventional care (diagnosis, evidence-based treatments, medications when appropriate) with complementary therapies (nutrition, sleep optimization, movement, stress reduction, mindfulness, acupuncture referrals, and select herbals) to support the whole person – mind, body, and lifestyle. It’s collaborative, science-guided, and personalized to help you feel and function better in daily life.

Key Points

  • Whole-Person Care: Looks beyond a diagnosis to include your medical history, lifestyle, stress, sleep, nutrition, movement, and environment.
  • Evidence + Complementary Therapies: Pairs standard medical care with mind–body practices, nutrition coaching, movement plans, and carefully selected supplements when helpful.
  • Personalized & Practical: Starts with high-impact basics you can actually do; plans fit your goals, preferences, and schedule.
  • Behavior Change Support: Simple steps for protein and fiber targets, sleep timing and light exposure, strength + steps, and stress skills that move the needle.
  • Team-Based: Coordinates with your current clinicians and makes referrals (e.g., acupuncture, physical therapy, counseling) when indicated.
  • In Boston, MA, mdPersonal Concierge Functional Medicine offers lifestyle medicine, complementary-therapy integration, and telehealth options.

How Integrative Medicine Can Help

Integrative medicine asks a practical question: “What mix of medical care and lifestyle tools will most improve your day-to-day life?” That often means treating blood pressure or reflux with guideline-based care and upgrading sleep, nutrition, movement, and stress capacity – so results are durable. If pain, insomnia, IBS, anxiety, or low energy are limiting you, integrative care builds a plan that supports healing and resilience, not just symptom suppression.

How It Works / What’s Involved

At mdPersonal Concierge Functional Medicine, care unfolds step by step:

  1. Deep Intake & Goals
We map your story, priorities, medications, and daily routines to find leverage points.
  2. Evidence-Based Foundation
We align with conventional guidelines for screening and treatment; medications are used when appropriate and reviewed for safety.
  3. Complementary Modalities
Depending on your needs and preferences, we may incorporate mindfulness and breathwork, yoga-informed movement, nutrition upgrades, sleep strategies, acupuncture referrals, and select herbals with clear instructions.
  4. Personalized Plan
Concrete actions for meal structure, protein/fiber, light/sleep timing, strength + steps, stress tools, and any needed medication or supplement support.
  5. Follow-Ups & Adjustments
Check-ins at 4–12 weeks to track progress, remove roadblocks, and adjust based on how you feel and function.

Is Integrative Medicine Right For Me?

Choose integrative care if you want a collaborative, practical plan that treats you – not just your diagnosis – and you’re open to lifestyle changes alongside medical care. It’s especially helpful for multi-symptom situations (e.g., stress, poor sleep, digestive discomfort, low energy, pain) where small, consistent changes add up.

Safety, Side Effects & When To Seek Care

We prioritize safety and simplicity. If medications or supplements are used, we review allergies, interactions, and contraindications, and start low when appropriate. Seek urgent care immediately for red-flag symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, severe abdominal pain, fainting, confusion, or stroke-like symptoms.

Dr. Neimark is a board-certified family physician, who attended the Ohio State University College of Medicine where he graduated with honors in 1981 and was elected into the scholastic medical honor society, Alpha Omega Alpha. While completing his internship, Dr. Neimark became disenchanted with traditional medicine's focus on treating the symptoms of disease, rather than dealing with the root cause. He realized that even with the best of medical care and technology, patients were unable to break out of the cycle of recurring illness.
